Ukraine Says Hit by 6,500 Hacks in Past 2 Months, Sees Russian 'Cyberwar'

Hackers have targeted Ukrainian state institutions about 6,500 times in the past two months, including incidents that showed Russian security services were waging a cyber war against the country, President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday.
In December, Ukraine suffered attacks on its finance and defense ministries and the State Treasury that allocates cash to government institutions. A suspected hack also wiped out part of Kiev's power grid, causing a blackout in part of the capital.
"Acts of terrorism and sabotage on critical infrastructure facilities remain possible today," Poroshenko said during a meeting of the National Security and Defence Council, according to a statement released by Poroshenko's office.
The statement said the president stressed that "the investigation of a number of incidents indicated the complicity directly or indirectly of Russian security services waging a cyber war against our country".
Relations between Kiev and Moscow collapsed in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea and support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, where fighting continues despite a ceasefire agreement.
Among the 6,500 attacks Poroshenko said the country had been hit by, the attack on the State Treasury halted its systems for several days, meaning state workers and pensioners had been unable to receive their salaries or payments on time.Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said last week a hacking group linked to the Russian government likely used a malware implant on Android devices to track and target Ukrainian artillery units from late 2014 through 2016.
Its findings are the latest to support a growing view among Western security officials and cybersecurity researchers that Russian President Vladimir Putin has increasingly relied on hacking to exert influence and attack geopolitical foes.
Russia has repeatedly denied hacking accusations.
Poroshenko's comments come as the Obama administration plans to announce retaliatory measures against Russia for hacking into US political institutions and individuals and leaking information in an effort to help Donald Trump win the presidency. Trump has dismissed the assessments of the US intelligence community.
In December 2015, Ukrainian regional power company Prykarpattyaoblenergo reported an outage, saying the area affected included the regional capital Ivano-Frankivsk. Ukraine's state security service blamed Russia.
Experts widely described that incident as the first known power outage caused by a cyber-attack. The US cyber firm iSight Partners identified the perpetrator as a Russian hacking group known as "Sandworm".
As a result of the cyber-attacks, Ukraine's security council agreed measures to protect state institutions, the statement said. It did not disclose what the measures were.

Reliance Jio Happy New Year Offer: Jio Justifies Extension of Free Calls, Data Offer to TRAI

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has told telecom regulator TRAI that its Happy New Year Offer, which provides free voice and data services to customers, does not violate any of the existing norms that require promotional offers to be limited to 90 days.

Replying to clarification sought by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on it extending the free call and data offer till March 31 after the promotional 90-day period expired on December 4, Reliance Jio sent a detailed note explaining how its Happy New Year Offer was different from the inaugural offer and does not qualify to be termed as predatory.

Sources with direct knowledge of the development said Reliance Jio explained in detail how the new Happy New Year Offer cannot be termed as extension of the promotional offer as it was different from the inaugural Welcome Offer launched in early September.
The response was to TRAI's letter dated December 20, in which the regulator asked Jio why its Happy New Year Offer should not be seen as "violation" of regulatory guidelines, and also why the offer of free data under the promotional scheme should not be treated as "predatory."

Jio has been maintaining that the latest Happy New Year offer is substantiative ly different from the Jio Welcome Offer (that commenced on September 5) as 4GB of free data per day was being provided under the initial offer, while the same was capped at 1GB (under Fair Usage Policy) in the new offer.

Jio is believed to have also emphasized that tariff plans have multiple components and if even a single component is altered, it cannot be construed as the same offer or its extension.

Also, they contend, that in the Welcome Offer there was no option of renewal or payment after the 4GB limit was exhausted, but in the new Happy New Year offer, one can recharge both data and the promised speed.

In terms of market dominance, Reliance Jio is six percent of the installations in the country, whereas the Competition Commission of India (CCI) norms specify 30 percent threshold to trigger the misuse of market dominance' clause.

BHIM App Android Download, iOS Version, Supported Banks, Transaction Limits, and More You Need to Know:

BHIM App Android Download, iOS Version, Supported Banks, Transaction Limits, and More You Need to Know:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a UPI (United Payments Interface) based app called BHIM, short for Bharat Interface for Money. The BHIM app is a straightforward UPI app, which would allow anyone to make simple digital payments directly from their bank account, and it is now available for download.
The UPI-based BHIM app allows anyone to pay or receive money through online banking, unlike a wallet where you have to first load the money before you can use it.
"Be it a smartphone or feature phone of Rs 1,000-1,200, BHIM app can be used. There is no need to have Internet connectivity," says PM Modi. "One only needs a thumb. There was a time when an illiterate was called 'angutha chchap'. Now, time has changed. Your thumb is your bank now. It has become your identity now."
Let's take a closer look at everything you need to know about the BHIM app.
What is BHIM app?
With the BHIM app, anyone can send or request money through the app to make a digital payment. The app is linked to your bank account, so you don't have to load money in it unlike a wallet, and a merchant does not have to worry about transferring the money back to their bank account.
How to download BHIMP app?
Download the BHIM app by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Google Play to start using the free Android app.
How to download BHIM app for iPhone?
BHIM app is presently now available on Android and will come to iPhone 'soon'.
How do I use BHIM app?
After you download the BHIM app, you'll have to register your bank account through the app, and set a UPI PIN. Your mobile number is your payment address, and you can start transacting. Through the app, you can send or receive money to a phone number, check balance, or scan a QR code to make a payment without sharing a phone number.
Using the BHIM app, money can also be sent to non-UPI banks through IFSC, like you do with normal net banking.
Does the BHIM app work on feature phones?
Apart from the Android app, the interface behind the BHIM app can be accessed using USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) from feature phones - you will need to dial *99# to access it. With this method, an Internet connection will not be required to use the core functionality behind the BHIM app.
What banks support the BHIM app?
All the major banks are supported by the BHIM app - as long as the bank supports UPI, you will be able to access your money through the BHIM app.
The list of banks supported by the BHIM app is as follows:

Ronda Rousey life. An undefeated champion.

Ronda Rousey life, everything you want to know:

Ronda Rousey life, everything you want to know
Ronda Rousey
Early life

Rousey was born in Riverside, California, the youngest of three daughters of AnnMaria De Mars (née Waddell) and Ron Rousey, of after whom Rousey was named. Her mother had a decorated Judo career and was the first U.S. citizen to win a World Judo Championship (in 1984). Her maternal grandfather was Venezuelan, and part Afro-Venezuelan ancestry; her maternal great-grandfather was Dr. Alfred E Waddell, a Trinidadian native who emigrated to Canada and became one of the first black physicians in North America. Her other roots are English and Polish. Her stepfather is an aerospace engineer. Her biological father, having broken his back sledding with his daughters and having learned that he would be a paraplegic, committed suicide in 1995 when Rousey was eight years old. AnnMaria pursued her Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of California, Riverside as her daughters grew up.

For the first six years of her life, Rousey struggled with speech and could not form an intelligible sentence due to apraxia, a neurological childhood speech sound disorder. This speech disorder was attributed to being born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck at birth. When Rousey was three years old, her mother and father moved from Riverside, California, to Jamestown, North Dakota, to obtain intensive speech therapy with specialists at Minot State University.

Rousey dropped out of high school and later earned a G.E.D.She was raised in Southern California and Jamestown, North Dakota, retiring from her judo career at 21 and starting her MMA career at 22 when she realized that she did not want to spend her life in a conventional field of work.
Olympic judo career

Rousey began Judo with her mother at the age of 11. Rousey trained with her mother until she was 13 after accidentally breaking her mother's wrist. At 17, Rousey qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, becoming the youngest judoka in the entire Games. Also in 2004, Rousey won a gold medal at the World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary.[citation needed]

In April 2006, she became the first female U.S. judoka in nearly 10 years to win an A-Level tournament as she went 5-0 to claim gold at the Birmingham World Cup in Great Britain. Later that year, the 19-year-old won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, becoming the first U.S. athlete ever to win two Junior World medals.

In February 2007, Rousey moved up to 70 kg where she ranked as one of the top three women in the world. She won the silver medal at the 2007 World Judo Championships in the middleweight division and the gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games

In August 2008, Rousey competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. She lost her quarterfinal to the Dutch ex-world champion Edith Bosch but qualified for a Bronze medal match through the repechage bracket. Rousey defeated Annett Boehm by Yuko to win a bronze medal (note: Judo offers two bronze medals per weight class). With the victory, Rousey became the first American to win an Olympic medal in women's judo since its inception as an Olympic sport in 1992.
Mixed martial arts career

Rousey retired from judo at 21 after the Olympics. After winning her Olympic medal, Rousey shared a studio apartment with a roommate in Venice Beach, California and worked three jobs as a bartender and cocktail waitress to support herself and her dog.

When Ronda started learning judo, her mom took her to judo clubs run by her old teammates. Ronda went to Hayastan MMA Academy run by Gokor Chivichyan, where she trained with fellow future MMA fighters Manny Gamburyan and Karo Parisyan. According to Rousey, Hayastan practiced "a more brawling style of judo versus the more technical Japanese style." Rousey trained mostly with males bigger than her and often got frustrated and cried when she got thrown and couldn't throw somebody. "Probably from 2002 to 2005 I cried every single night of training," Rousey remarked.

Rousey trained closely with Gamburyan. After tearing up her knee when she was 16, Gamburyan volunteered to open the gym every afternoon and work with her personally. Back in 2004, her teammates thought Rousey "would kill these girls" in MMA, but also thought she was "too pretty to get hit in the face" and should keep doing judo. While Gamburyan and Parisyan went into MMA, Rousey stuck with judo but remained in touch with MMA through them. The first MMA fight she took an interest in watching was Manny Gamburyan versus Nate Diaz in The Ultimate Fighter finale. Rousey stated she never got as excited watching judo or any other sport. After the 2008 Olympics the following year, she decided to start MMA through Team Hayastan.

Rousey also trains at the Glendale Fighting Club, which she was introduced to through Gamburyan and other Hayastan teammates. She started training under her current coach Edmond Tarverdyan at GFC.[37] Tarverdyan is a former WBC Muay Thai National Champion.[38]

She trained in Jiu Jitsu at Dynamix MMA with Henry Akins from 2011 to 2014[39] and has since trained with Ryron Gracie and Rener Gracie of Gracie Academy,[40] as well as BJ Penn of Art of Jiu Jitsu.[41]
Early career

Rousey made her mixed martial arts debut as an amateur on August 6, 2010. She defeated Hayden Munoz by submission due to an armbar in 23 seconds.

She entered the quarterfinals of the Tuff-N-Uff 145 lbs women's tournament on November 12, 2010, and submitted promotional veteran Autumn Richardson with an armbar in 57 seconds.

Rousey faced Taylor Stratford in the Tuff-N-Uff tournament semi-finals on January 7, 2011, and won by technical submission due to an armbar in 24 seconds. She then announced plans to turn pro and was replaced in the tournament.Rousey has a perfect 3-0 record in amateur MMA competition, and the combined duration of all her amateur fights is under 2 minutes.

Rousey made her professional mixed martial arts debut on March 27, 2011 at King of the Cage: Turning Point. She submitted Ediane Gomes with an armbar in 25 seconds.

Rousey faced kickboxing champion Charmaine Tweet in an MMA bout at Hard Knocks Fighting Championship: School of Hard Knocks 12 on June 17, 2011 in Calgary, Canada. She submitted Tweet with an armbar in 49 seconds.
Strikeforce

Rousey was scheduled to make her Strikeforce debut against Sarah D'Alelio on July 30, 2011 at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The fight was pushed back and eventually took place on the Strikeforce Challengers 18 main card on August 12, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.[50] Rousey defeated D'Alelio by technical submission due to an armbar early in the first round. The victory was controversial. Rousey claimed that D'Alelio yelled "tap" more than once and that D'Alelio denied this and claimed to have yelled "AAAAHHH". According to the unified rules of mixed martial arts, either one of these utterances would still be a verbal submission.

Rousey faced Julia Budd at Strikeforce Challengers 20 on November 18, 2011 in Las Vegas. She won via submission due to an armbar in the first round, dislocating Budd's elbow in the process. Following the fight, she announced plans to move down to 135 pounds to challenge Miesha Tate, the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion at the time, with whom she had developed a much-publicized rivalry.[53][54]

During his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast 690, Rousey's trainer Edmund Tarverdyan said that Rousey started her MMA career in the 145lb division because she had to be able to make weight at short notice, due to the difficulty of finding willing opponents.

Rousey challenged Tate for her Strikeforce title on March 3, 2012, in Columbus, Ohio. She defeated Tate by submission due to an armbar in the first round, again dislocating her opponent's elbow, to become the new Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion.

Rousey appeared in All Access: Ronda Rousey on Showtime. The half-hour special debuted on August 8, 2012.[58] UFC President Dana White revealed during the program that "In the next 10 years if there's a woman in the octagon, it's probably going to be Ronda Rousey."The second installment of the special aired on August 15, 2012.[60] Rousey also appeared on Conan.[61]

Rousey defended her Strikeforce title against Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman on August 18, 2012, in San Diego, California.[62] Rousey said that she would throw Kaufman's arm at her corner after ripping it off with an armbar, and threatened to choke or pound Kaufman's face to death.[63] During the fight, Rousey would quickly take down Kaufman and submit her with an armbar in just 54 seconds to retain the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship. After the fight, Rousey announced that if former Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos wanted to fight her, it would have to take place at bantamweight.[64][65][66]
Ultimate Fighting Championship

In November 2012, the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced that Rousey had become the first female fighter to sign with the UFC.[67][68] UFC President Dana White officially announced at the UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz pre-fight press conference that Rousey was the first UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion.

Rousey originally opposed using the nickname her friends gave her, "Rowdy", feeling it would be disrespectful to professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. After meeting Piper (circa 2012 or 2013) through Gene LeBell, who helped train both of them, Piper personally gave his approval.[69]

Rousey defended her title against Liz Carmouche on February 23, 2013, at UFC 157. Despite being caught in an early standing neck crank attempt from Carmouche, Rousey got out of it and successfully defended her Bantamweight Championship title, winning the fight at 4:49 into the first round by submission due to an armbar. Liz Carmouche dislocated Ronda Rousey's jaw during the fight

After Cat Zingano defeated Miesha Tate at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen Finale, Dana White announced that Zingano would be a coach of The Ultimate Fighter 18 against Rousey. On May 28, it was announced that Zingano would not be a coach and opponent for Rousey after Zingano suffered a knee injury earlier that same month which would require surgery; therefore, Miesha Tate instead would coach on The Ultimate Fighter 18 against Rousey.

Rousey faced Miesha Tate, in a rematch from Strikeforce, at UFC 168 on December 28, 2013. After going past the first two rounds, with Tate surviving an armbar attempt and a triangle attempt, Rousey finally submitted Tate via armbar in the third round to retain her Bantamweight Championship.[74] In an interview with Los Angeles Daily News, Rousey said she had lost muscle during her film commitments and not been able to regain her full strength for the Tate fight.

It was announced at the UFC 168 post-fight press conference that Rousey would defend the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship against fellow Olympic medalist and undefeated fighter, Sara McMann in the main event at UFC 170 on February 22, 2014. Rousey won the fight by TKO after knocking down McMann with a knee to the body. This marked Rousey's first career win via a method other than armbar. The stoppage led to controversy, with some sports writers and attendants finding it premature.

In 2014, Rousey was named one of espnW's Impact 25.

On April 11, 2014 it was announced that Rousey would defend the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship against Alexis Davis in the co-main event at UFC 175 on July 5, 2014. She won the fight via knockout just 16 seconds into the first round. Rousey broke her thumb during the fight.[80] The emphatic win also earned Rousey her second Performance of the Night bonus award.

A match between Rousey and Cat Zingano was scheduled to take place at UFC 182 for the women's bantamweight title. However, the fight was moved to February 28, 2015 at UFC 184.Rousey defeated Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds, the shortest match in UFC championship history.

Rousey fought Bethe Correia on August 1, 2015 in Brazil, at UFC 190, winning the bout by knockout 34 seconds into the first round.[85] Rousey dedicated the match to "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who died the day before, commenting that Piper was one of her inspirations and had endorsed her use of his nickname.[86]

The completion of this bout marked Rousey's sixth official with the UFC, all of which had been victories. She spent 1077 seconds in the octagon to attain all six and accumulated $1,080,000 in prize money; this equated to nearly $1002.79 for every second spent fighting.[ Her average time of 2 minutes and 59 seconds was less than the average time of a single match in every UFC weight class, the fastest of which was the Heavyweight division with a time of 7 minutes and 59 seconds.

In her seventh title defense, Rousey faced Holly Holm in the main event at UFC 193 on November 15, 2015. Despite being a heavy betting favorite, Rousey was unable to get Holm to the ground and had no answer for Holm's superior striking. Early in the second round, Holm knocked Rousey out with punches to the face after a high kick to the neck, ending Rousey's three-year reign as champion. It was also her first loss. After the fight, Rousey and Holm were each awarded a Fight of the Night bonus of $50,000.She was also medically suspended by UFC on November 18, 2015, which included a no-contact suspension for 45-days, and no fights for 60-days, and would have to depend on CT scan results to have the suspension reduced. She was medically cleared on December 9, 2015.

Rousey faced current champion Amanda Nunes on December 30, 2016 at UFC 207 in which she lost in the first 48 seconds of the first round via TKO.
Views on MMA

Rousey has challenged the notion of MMA being anti-woman. She argued, "There are so many ridiculous arguments that MMA is somehow anti-woman. Fighting is not a man's thing, it is a human thing. To say that it is anti-woman is an anti-feminist statement."[95] Some journalists have characterized Rousey as a feminist,[96] while others have described her as "antifeminist".
Professional wrestling career
Rousey celebrating with The Rock after forcing Stephanie McMahon and Triple H out of the ring at WrestleMania 31

Rousey is a professional wrestling fan. Her nickname, "Rowdy", was taken from late professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper, whom she asked for permission. She, Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir have dubbed themselves "The Four Horsewomen," a play on The Four Horsemen professional wrestling stable, with the blessing of leader Ric Flair and enforcer Arn Anderson.
WWE (2014–2015)

The Four Horsewomen were acknowledged on camera and commentary as such, in the front row at WWE's SummerSlam in August 2014. They also went backstage for that event, meeting Paul Heyman, among others.Rousey was interviewed by WWE.com that night; when asked if she, like Brock Lesnar, would cross over to wrestling, she replied: "You never know."

At WrestleMania 31 in March 2015, they were seated in the front row. During an in-ring argument between The Rock and the Authority (Stephanie McMahon and Triple H), McMahon slapped the Rock and ordered him to leave "herring". She taunted him, saying he would not hit a woman. He left, paused and walked over to Rousey to a loud ovation. He then helped her into the ring, and said that she would be happy to hit McMahon for him. After a few minutes of a staredown and more dialogue, the Rock attacked Triple H. When he stumbled toward Rousey, she hip tossed him out of the ring. McMahon tried to slap her, was blocked and Rousey grabbed her arm, teasing an armbar, before throwing her out of the ring. Rousey and the Rock celebrated in the ring, while the Authority retreated with the implication of revenge. The segment was replayed and discussed throughout the next night's Raw. Commentators hyped a tweet Rousey made earlier that day, in which she implied a return to WWE with "We're just gettin' started...".
Fighting style

"While some fighters strike an impassive pose … Rousey is nothing if not expressive. She smiles often, squinting so tightly that her eyes disappear. She cries easily, a girlhood habit she never outgrew. And before each fight, she glares at her opponent as if she were getting ready to put a permanent end to a lifelong feud. After the fight, she is all smiles again, and usually unblemished."
- The New Yorker, 2014

In a 2012 interview[104] before her first match with Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey said: "When I was doing judo my main advantage was my conditioning and my pace; I used to wear people out." She had taken to heart a quote from Ryoko Tani to fight every five seconds as if it was the last five seconds of the match.

A decorated judoka, Rousey typically grounds an opponent with tosses and sweeps, then seeks to finish with strikes or submissions.[105][106] From top position, she usually attacks with punches from side control; in a rear position, she often secures a back mount and attacks with head strikes.Rousey is right-handed but is a left-handed judoka fighting in an orthodox stance as a striker.

Rousey's favorite MMA fighter is Fedor Emelianenko, whose fighting style she works to emulate.

Rousey is well known for her skill in grappling and is particularly noted for her string of victories by armbar. Against accomplished strikers, such as Julia Budd and Sarah Kaufman, Rousey has typically brought the fight down and sought a quick submission1 Powerful grapplers, such as Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche, have been more competitive with Rousey on the ground.

During early fights in her MMA career, Rousey mainly used striking to set up judo. She became a more proficient striker following her UFC debut, leading to her first wins by way of stoppage. While standing, Rousey normally uses jabs, knees, and overhand rights. She also seldom stands side on with a set boxing stance, but rather squaring up to the opponent, but still generate great striking power, especially when they are near the fence, or clinching opponents with the left hand to close the distance, while pummeling opponents with strikes, much akin to a Muay Thai fighter launching kickers from the clinch.

While discussing her signature armbar in an interview, Rousey noted that her judoka mother jumped on her every morning to wake her up with armbars.

Rousey is notable for introducing trash talking to Women's MMA. In many interviews, Rousey has used harsh language and openly downplayed the abilities of her opponents, which she explains as a way to generate more publicity for the sport.
Other work

Rousey appeared nude on the cover of ESPN The Magazine's 2012 Body Issue and in a pictorial therein.Touching upon the strategic cropping, poses, and arm placement used in the photos to make them less revealing, Rousey explained: "With all these ring girls and their vaginas – all of this goes back to advice my mom gave me. She gave me this one piece of advice, which I still hold dear. She said, 'Look, whatever pictures you put out there are gonna be out there forever, so just think that one day your 12 or 13-year-old son or daughter is going to see those pictures. Whatever you want your son or daughter, or even your 13-year-old little sister to see, keep that in mind.' So, whatever I’m not gonna show on a beach, I'm not gonna show in a magazine. These girls are going to have to explain to their kids one day why mommy's ass and vagina are all over the place." Her rival Miesha Tate criticized Rousey's comments as "hypocritical", arguing that Rousey's comments about ring girls constituted a double standard.[clarification needed]

In May 2013, Rousey was ranked 29 on the Maxim Hot 100.She also appeared on the cover and in a pictorial of the September 2013 issue. During her Maxim interview, she stated that she is unbelievably ticklish and goes ninja when people try to tickle her. Also, sharing that she used to be pinned down, tickled by friends and siblings when she was younger. Previously, while on Conan O'Brien, showing off her ESPN cover and going over MMA rules, being playful, she mentioned her weakness, that she is extremely ticklish.

Rousey co-starred in The Expendables 3 (2014), marking her first role in a major motion picture. In 2015, she appeared in the film Furious 7, and played herself in the film Entourage.

In 2015, Rousey became the first woman featured on the cover of Australian Men's Fitness, appearing on their November edition.

In October 2015, Rousey became the first female athlete to guest host ESPN's SportsCenter.

Rousey was on the cover of the January 2016 issue for The Ring magazine. She became the first mixed martial artist to ever appear on the cover of the boxing magazine and the second woman as well, after Cathy Davis in 1978.[126] In February 2016 she appeared in body paint as one of three cover athletes on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Rousey has had a range of commercial partnerships, including mobile network operator MetroPCS,insurance agency Insureon,Reebok, and Carl's Jr.

Rousey hosted the January 23, 2016 episode of the late night variety show Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Selena Gomez.

A number of starring film roles have been developed for Rousey, including an adaptation of her autobiography My Fight/Your Fight at Paramount, The Athena Project at Warner Bros., the Peter Berg-directed action film Mile 22, and a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze action drama Road House. Road House will mark her biggest acting job to date. According to Variety, Rousey reached out to Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask for her blessing, which Niemi gave.
Personal life

Rousey was a vegan after Beijing 2008,but in 2012 described her current diet as "kind of a mix between a Paleo and a Warrior diet", trying to eat everything organic.

Rousey has discussed how she dealt with body image in the past and her struggle with it. She explained, "When I was in school, martial arts made you a dork, and I became self-conscious that I was too masculine. I was a 16-year-old girl with ringworm and cauliflower ears. People made fun of my arms and called me 'Miss Man'. It wasn't until I got older that I realized: these people are idiots. I'm fabulous."

Rousey is an avid fan of Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon. Her favorite Pokémon is Mew and she had a childhood crush on Vegeta.[1Christopher Sabat, the English voice actor of Vegeta, jokingly replied in an interview, "She has seen my power level for what it is… She also scares me."She also plays World of Warcraft, primarily as a night elf hunter.

In 2015, she raised money for the Black Jaguar White Tiger Foundation, whose goal is to save big cats from circuses and zoos and provide them with the best lifestyle, by auctioning signed T-shirts.

In April 2015, Rousey visited Yerevan, Armenia for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. While in Yerevan, she visited the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide memorial.

Rousey endorsed Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign in the 2016 United States presidential election.

In February 2016, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres Rousey admitted the thought of committing suicide went through her mind in the aftermath of her knockout loss to Holly Holm in November 2015.
Relationships

Rousey once dated fellow UFC fighter Brendan Schaub. In August 2015, Rousey was rumored to be in a relationship with another UFC fighter Travis Browne, who knocked out Schaub in about the previous year, after a picture of the two together appeared on Twitter and Browne's estranged wife Jenna Renee Webb accused the two of seeing one another. Browne was at the time still married and under investigation by the UFC after Webb publicly accused him of domestic violence back in July. Browne confirmed he and Rousey were together in October 2015. The next day, Rousey announced publicly that she was dating Browne.
Domestic violence incident

In her autobiography, My Fight, Your Fight, Rousey revealed she assaulted an ex-boyfriend she dubbed "Snappers McCreepy", two weeks before her first fight with Miesha Tate after Rousey discovered that he had taken nude photos of her without her consent or knowledge. Rousey wrote, "I slapped him across the face so hard my hand hurt." The ex-boyfriend didn't respond physically, but he blocked the door and refused to move when Rousey tried to leave.

Rousey goes on to write that the ex-boyfriend jumped in her car and when he wouldn’t get out, she proceeded to assault him further. Although Rousey deleted the photos and erased his hard drive, fear that the pictures may still be out there influenced her to pose for ESPN's Body Issue so that nude pictures of her would be seen on her own terms.

Why microsoft isn't the leader in smartphone markets anymore?

Why Microsoft isn't the leader in smartphone markets anymore?

microsoft windows phone leader
Earlier today I read a great piece in ArsTechnica about Microsoft’s annual shareholder meeting, where many in attendance expressed their belief to CEO Satya Nadella that Microsoft had effectively ceded control of the smartphone market to Apple and Google, and had ceased to be a serious competitor.

One Windows Phone-using shareholder, Dana Vance, expressed his dismay that Microsoft had released certain apps on iOS and Android before Windows 10 Mobile. Vance also brought up the claims that development of the Microsoft Band had been discontinued.Another audience member was blunter, and asked Nadella straight up whether Microsoft was committed to Windows Mobile.
A slow and steady decline

So, here’s the thing. Eons ago, Microsoft was one of the market leaders when it came to mobile productivity. This was before Steve Jobs had even conceived the iPhone. Back then, the smartphone race was bitterly-fought between four main players: Palm, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Microsoft. Windows Mobile 6 – Microsoft’s offering – had a respectable market share of around 30 percent.

Windows Mobile did well with overworked office managers and financiers who wanted a convenient way to access their emails and tap out office documents, but its popular appeal was limited. The vast majority of handsets were just too drab and clunky for most ordinary consumers to even consider buying them.

But in 2007, everything went to shit for Microsoft. Apple released the iPhone, and in turn transformed the smartphone market into something that hadn’t been seen before. The iPhone was a phone that allowed people to get shit done while actually looking the part. It was the first truly aspirational smartphone. Everyone from teens to executives wanted their hands on one. And then shortly after Google unveiled Android which allowed companies like Samsung and HTC to offer iPhone-like functionality but at a fraction of the cost.

At that point, the final nail in the Windows Phone 6’s coffin had been all but hammered. It started to hemorrhage users. Microsoft tried to stem the flow with Windows Mobile 6.5, which worked slightly better on touch-only handsets and had a better browser, but it just wasn’t enough.

By the time the company released its first real modern smartphone OS – Windows Phone 7 – Microsoft’s overall share had shrunk to a fraction of what it was in 2005. This was a profoundly humbling moment for a company that had dominated the world of computing since the early 1990’s.

Despite the subsequent launches of Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 8.1, and Windows Mobile 10, Microsoft has never recovered in the mobile space.
It shouldn’t have to be this way

The most tragic thing about Microsoft’s unstoppable decline in the mobile is that it feels completely unnecessary.

There’s literally no reason why Microsoft – a company with vast financial resources and some of the world’s most talented developers and researchers on its payroll – should struggle like this.

Perhaps the biggest reason why Windows Phone (and later Windows Mobile) suffocated was that there was a vacuum of consumer enthusiasm. Nobody really cared about it. What frustrates me the most is that there were things that Microsoft could have done (and indeed, can do) to turn this around.
The struggling app store

Let’s address the ten-ton elephant in the room: the app store. Right now, the biggest reason why you shouldn’t buy a Windows Phone is that there’s a veritable drought of apps. Worse, of the scattering of apps that do exist, many of them haven’t received an update in a really long time.Straight out of the gate, Microsoft should have taken a leaf out of RIM’s book and offered some serious financial incentives to developers.

Yes, I know that in 2013 it briefly offered to pay developers a whopping $100 for each newly-published app. Yes, I know that there were some private (and hefty) financial incentives given to larger companies, like Foursquare.

Clearly, these weren’t sufficient, and they weren’t sustained to ensure that these apps had feature-parity with their Android and iOS equivalents.
Taking control of hardware

The erstwhile CEO of Microsoft, Steven Ballmer, has some pretty strong thoughts on this subject. He (rightly) thinks that Microsoft should have gotten into the hardware game way sooner. Doing so would have allowed Microsoft to release phones where it can exercise control over every aspect of the device, much like Apple is with the iPhone.

This makes a lot of sense. During the brief halcyon days of Windows Phone, there were a smattering of devices running the software from a variety of manufacturers including Nokia, Blu, HTC, Alcatel, and ZTE.

Many of these were, at face value, pretty identical. In terms of industrial design and internal specifications, there wasn’t much to choose from. Moreover, it’s hard to differentiate between a Windows Phone device and an Android device because Microsoft only allows a certain amount of software customization.

From a consumer perspective, this was pretty confusing. I imagine that many people took a look at the then dizzying Windows Phone device ecosystem and promptly gave up, instead choosing to spend their money on an Android or iPhone. In retrospect, buying Nokia was a great idea. The Finnish mobile icon made great phones. Their industrial design was top-notch, and they were perhaps the most visible and committed manufacturer of Windows devices.

The biggest mistake Microsoft made was its inertia to retire the Nokia brand and take control of the Windows Phone ecosystem.

When it bought the company in 2014, it should have immediately stopped licensing its software and instead have committed to releasing three phones per year: a low-end, a mid-tier, and a premium flagship device.

This would have allowed Microsoft to take a holistic look at how people use its devices, and allow it to take the same detail-oriented approach to user experience that Apple takes with the iPhone.

Microsoft can make amazing hardware. This fact has been proven time-and-again with the likes of the Xbox One, Surface, Surface Book, and Surface Studio. Imagine what it would be like if the only Windows Phones on the market were a range of enticing, well-built Surface Phones?
Microsoft should have put on its dreaming cap

Over the past five years, Microsoft has evolved from a company obsessed with making incremental improvements to its software, to one that’s fundamentally adventurous and is obsessed with the new and undiscovered. Hololens anyone? But this hasn’t really materialized on the mobile front.

I’ve got a theory about this. Since 2007, when Apple launched the iPhone, Microsoft has been playing catch-up. It’s been so obsessed with ensuring that things work and that the essential features are present, it hasn’t been able to bring its vision for things like augmented reality to its mobile product.

From early on, Microsoft should have explored how it can differentiate its mobile offering from Apple and Google. It should have been bold. It wasn’t, and today Windows Phone languishes as an also-ran smartphone OS.
The last hurrah?

There were other things I wanted to mention. I wanted to bring up the confusing, inconsistent branding (note how many times I switch between Windows Phone and Windows Mobile in this article). I desperately wanted to rant about how I thought the platform was badly marketed. But time is short, and there just weren’t the column inches.

Some of you will read my article and furiously type out a comment about how I’m “a bias”  and an Apple fanboy. You’d be wrong. Not that it matters, but this Monday I bought a Dell XPS 13, and over my lifetime I’ve owned four different Windows phones. As a platform, I’ve given it plenty of chances. Perhaps more than it deserves.

But time is running out for Microsoft’s mobile ambitions. Microsoft is rumored to be working on a Surface Phone. Satya Nadella says that this will be the “ultimate mobile device”. Will this be the company’s last hurrah before it eventually consigns itself to building apps and services for the other two big incumbents?

Maybe. But I hope not.

I’m a perennial optimist, and as a result, haven’t written Windows 10 Mobile off quite just yet. I feel that if Microsoft somehow manages to convince developers to return to the platform, and if it can build a device that can compete with the current range of desirable flagships, then maybe – just maybe – it’ll have a chance.

Maybe. But I doubt it.

Top Android apps of 2016:

Top Android apps of 2016:

Prisma A simple photo-editing app created by an app developer in Moscow, Russia, made headlines overnight for its unique style of effects

It is time for our verdict on the best Android apps for 2016. This year saw the revival of instant messaging apps in the form of Allo and Signal as well as an array of photo and video editing/sharing apps like Prisma, Boomerang, Photo Scan and more.

Although it was a year dominated by virtual reality (VR) our list does not entail any VR or smartwatch related apps as they require an external device for them to work with. Additionally, we have also not included games in this list as we feel that deserves a separate list of its own.
Let's take a look at IBTimes UK's pick of the top Android apps for 2016.
Prisma
A simple photo-editing app created by an app developer in Moscow, Russia, made headlines overnight for its unique style of effects. Google Play Store has also rated it as the users' choice and the stand-out app of the year.
To use the app users need to select a photo or click a picture with the camera and select from among 33 different filters inspired by famous art styles like Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, Munch, Levitan and Kandinsky, as well as popular patterns and ornaments like DC comic book illustrations. The app uses neural networks and artificial intelligence to turn your photos into masterpieces.

GOOGLE ALLO

Allo made the headlines because it was the first product to incorporate the firm's new artificially intelligent aide, Google Assistant. The bot interacts with users just like any other person while helping them out with their needs and Google Search has been used as the base directory. Termed as a "smart messaging app" the bots enable smart reply and automatically answer for you when another person asks you a question.

REDDIT

Long awaited, the mobile app of the much popular site was launched in April. While some longtime Redditors heavily criticise the app, most casual users including first timers were appreciative of the app's intuitive interface making it easier to dive into topics and communities. The communications tab pulls messages, comments, replies and mentions into one place for quick access, and the main tab puts the web's hottest content just taps away.

SIGNAL

In the wake of data privacy concerns and e-mail hacks people are longing for more options among encrypted apps. One such app, Signal, gained much popularity this year with many security researchers saying it is one of the most secure platforms ever.

It is a complete replacement for your existing SMS app letting you send encrypted messages to users, and even make encrypted VoIP calls. It is the only private messenger that uses open source peer-reviewed cryptographic protocols to keep messages safe. Signal is not currently compatible with tablets but support may be coming soon in 2017.

GOOGLE TRIPS:

Google has been trying to make its ecosystem all encompassing and its latest attempt is the Google Trips app that scans your Gmail inbox for flight, train, ferry, cab, hotel information and pulls it into a one-stop-shop. It then helps decide itineraries for these cities listed on the travel documents accessed including attractions, restaurants and more. So, instead of logging onto to TripAdvisor again and again one can just get travel guides through this app.

 BOOMERANG:

Instagram has been flooded with bobble heads this year thanks to Boomerang that takes a burst of still photos, then stitches them together in a short, looping video. The result, well something short and innovative and can be classified between a GIF and a stop-motion movie.

It is a spin-off app by Instagram, which is now owned by Facebook.

Gesture control is a huge fad among smartphone lovers nowadays. But there are still many models that don't have gesture control features on them like the OnePlus One or Motorola phones. For them Gravity Gestures is the perfect solution as it brings useful gesture functions and a lot more to any Android device without having to change your handset.

How Will Big Data Evolve in the Year Ahead?

How Will Big Data Evolve in the Year Ahead?
big data is changing the world

People, organizations and things will continue to generate ever-larger volumes of data in the months and years ahead, but expect to see some changes in how that information will be put to use, not just by humans but by artificial intelligence (AI) as well.
A recent survey by the analyst firm Gartner Inc., for instance, found that while big data technologies are seeing more overall investment, that spending will be done by fewer companies over the next couple years. And that trend is likely to lead to a growing divide between organizations that "know" and those that don't, according to IDC.
Big data users will also need to ask deeper questions about the kinds of information they are and aren't collecting and analyzing. Beyond that, they'll need to honestly consider their willingness to act on results that might conflict with old ways of doing business, according to Gartner.
Need for Unbiased Models, Openness to New Ideas
That last lesson is one that Gartner research director Robert Hetu pointed out shortly after the unexpected results of the U.S. presidential election in November.
"The failure to accurately predict the outcome of the elections has caused some backlash against big data and algorithms," Hetu wrote in a Nov. 10 blog post. "This is misguided. The real issue is failure to build unbiased models that will identify trends that do not fit neatly into our present understanding. This is one of the most urgent challenges for big data, advanced analytics and algorithms."
Identifying trends through big data analytics is one thing, but persuading people to accept the reality of those trends and act on them is something else entirely, Hetu noted. Before the election, for example, there were a few analysts who recognized the outcome the data was pointing to, but they were "repeatedly laughed at and disregarded," he said.
This is the foundation of the problem, according to Hetu. "Organizations must foster environments where new ideas are embraced and safely explored," he said. "This is how we will grow the convergence of things we know."
While people need to be open to new ideas, organizations will also have to develop better and smarter algorithms and AI systems to automate responses to insights revealed through big data analytics. That's especially important as technologies, such as cognitive computing, get better at teasing valuable findings out of unstructured as well as structured data.
More Machine Learning, Team-Based Data Science
"Near-term opportunities for cognitive systems are in industries such as banking, securities and investments, and manufacturing," IDC program director Jessica Goepfert said in an October statement about a report on global cognitive computing and AI spending. "In these segments, we find a wealth of unstructured data, a desire to harness insights from this information, and an openness to innovative technologies."
In its report, IDC predicted that healthcare and manufacturing will be the biggest drivers of cognitive computing and AI revenues between now and 2020, while the education sector will also invest heavily in such technologies.
Earlier this month, Tony Baer, principal analyst in information management at Ovum, predicted that machine learning in particular "will be the biggest disruptor for big data analytics in 2017." That trend will also make it increasingly important for organizations to treat data science as a "team sport," he added.
IBM's big data evangelist James Kobielus has also predicted many changes to how businesses and other organizations will put data scientists to work in the coming year. According to Kobielus, data science skills will become increasingly important for traditional IT professionals, and that more data scientists will work within cloud-based development environments and find training through crowdsourcing. Additionally, he predicted an increase in the number of "self-taught citizen data scientists" that will work alongside traditional experts on high-priority enterprise projects.
"People who can design AI-powered products that combine robotics, embodied cognition, IoT fog computing, deep learning, predictive analytics, emotion analytics, geospatial contextualization, conversational engagement and wearable form factors will be in hot demand," Kobielus said. "We are at the start of an amazing period of mind-blowing innovation in the consumer and industrial economy. Every human artifact is being retrofitted with AI capabilities or being designed from the ground up either to function as intelligent assistants or to handle many chores autonomously that their owners can't or prefer not to do themselves."

Cyber War Started between INDIA and Pakistan! Pakistani Websites Hacked By Indian Hackers:

Indian Hackers Hacked and locked up Pakistani Government websites meanwhile the pak techies are asking to reopen the blocked sites offered to pay bitcoins.
There is a technical war going on between two neighbors as Indian and Pakistan, soon after the claim of Surgical Strike from Indian Officials, The Pakistan Cyber boys Claimed to attack more than 7,000 Indian Websites.
Pakistani hackers hacked many Indian sites with a logo of Pakistan (Pakistan Hacker Group) ‘Haxors Crew‘ and with a song “Ae watan tere ishara aagaya, ar sipahi ko pukar aagaya…” which technically means (In the name of the nation, we’ve received your signal, even soldiers has got his callings)… and next paying text as “tum ne socha tha, hum ne kar dikhaya” which means (You thought and we’ve already done that)…
Pakistani hackers widely threatening  as challenging Indian hackers for a cyber war by saying “We are Unbeatable. You… kill innocent people in Kashmir and call yourself defenders of your country. You violate the ceasefire on the border and call it ‘Surgical Strikes’. Now kiss the burn of Cyber War”
And the next step is taken by Indian hackers as to hit back. as per the officials, Indians hackers already locked up many Pakistani Govt computers, there are large numbers of Pakistani govt and non-govt sites already hacked, the Indian hackers encrypted the sites whole data along with computers.
Pakistani tech guys are unable to decrypt the site data, for that, they has already offered Indian Hackers in exchange of Bitcoins to unlock the sites which have under the authority of Indian hackers.
One of the Indian Black Hat Hacker told Daily Mail, “To unlock their data, techies from Pakistan also paid in Bitcoins but ‘patriotic’ Indians refused to give away the decrypt key to unlock the data. Pakistani officials have been asked to pay the amount again to unlock.”
As per Daily Mail who connected with Indian Black Hat Hacker stated that the Indian Hackers refused to exchange site using bitcoins, which means the site authority and control are still under Indian Hackers.
One Indian hacker told Daily Mail, “Indian hackers are technically sound and can easily spy or steal data from any country. But no one ever tried to bring young talents under one umbrella for information gathering”
Indian hackers claimed they are ready for a massive cyber attack on their neighbouring country as Pakistan, which can destroy their country’s cyberspace.
“Indian hackers just responded after smelling the malicious intention of Pakistani hackers. Techies across the border targeted Indian sites. They are also trying to circulate fake links and videos claiming that India never carried out the surgical strike,” said Kislay Chaudhary, a cyber crime expert.

10 Greatest Inventions of Nikola Tesla

10 Greatest Inventions of Nikola Tesla that everyone needs to know:

Nikola Tesla was a man with big ideas if you couldn’t tell by the 300 patents to his name. Unfortunately, he was way ahead of his time and while a lot of his more elaborate ideas theoretically worked, they never really panned out. Still, while he never received the recognition of his chief rival Thomas Edison, the man was a brilliant inventor who gave the world some amazing and pioneering innovations. Here are some of the most incredible creations of Nikola Tesla.

Nikola Tesla top 10 inventions that world need to know.

10. The Tesla coil:

The Tesla coil was invented in 1891 and uses two coils, a primary and a secondary, with each coil having its own capacitor. A capacitor, like a battery, stores energy. The coils are connected to a spark gap, which is just open air where the spark can generate, and the result is that the Tesla Coil can shoot lightning bolts, send electric currents through the body and create electron winds.

Tesla developed this innovation because he was obsessed with powering cities wirelessly. Today, the Tesla Coil is mostly used for entertainment and can be seen in places like science centers and museums, and some elements of it are also used in radios. The importance of the Tesla Coil comes from the fact that it helped engineers understand the nature of electricity how to use it.

9. The Magnifying Transmitter:

Tesla became obsessed with transferring power without wires and thought it was possible to do it at higher altitudes, so after securing funding he set up a lab in Colorado Springs in 1899. There, he built the largest and most powerful Tesla Coil, called the Magnifying Transmitter. The Magnifying Transmitter had three coils and was 52 feet in diameter. It generated millions of volts of electricity and shot lightning bolts that were 130 feet long – the biggest man-made lightning at the time.

The problem was that Tesla was a bit too ambitious for the era, and wireless electricity wouldn’t be developed until the mid-2010s, and as of 2015, it’s still not yet common in households. While this specific project didn’t pan out, the vision and scope are still quite impressive. The Magnifying Transmitter was the predecessor to Tesla’s Wardenclyffe Tower, which was supposed to provide free electricity and communications to the world. Tesla started working on the project in 1901, but after financial backers pulled out the project fell apart and in 1915 the site went into foreclosure. The project also ruined Tesla, who had to file for bankruptcy and had a nervous breakdown.

8. The Tesla Turbine:

In the early 20th century, the world saw the rise of the piston engine in automobiles. In an attempt to compete against the piston engine, Tesla developed his own turbine. It was bladeless and used smooth discs that spun in a chamber, and worked when fuel was combusted before entering the main chamber that contained the discs.

The combustion would make the disks rotate, which ran the engine. When Tesla tested the engine in 1909, it got 60 percent fuel efficiency, which is impressive considering that currently we only get 42 percent fuel to energy conversion rates. Yet because of the nature of business, people saw more value in the piston engine because of fuel sales, and it became the norm that is still in use today.

7.Tesla Shadowgraphs:

In 1895, German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered a mysterious energy that he called X-rays. He noticed that when he placed photographic film between his hand and a lead screen, it created an image of the bones in his hand on the film. A short time later, Röntgen went public with his research and the picture of Röntgen wife’s hand became famous. In the picture, you can see the bones in her hand and the wedding ring on her finger.

There is some evidence that Tesla knew a little bit about X-rays before Röntgen made his research public. Tesla’s own research was stopped when a fire destroyed his lab in 1895, shortly before Röntgen discovered the technology. When Röntgen published his findings, it helped inspire Tesla to create his own X-ray using a vacuum tube, which produced pictures that he called “shadowgraphs.” Tesla is considered the first person in America to take an X-ray picture, having produced a shadowgraph of a foot with a shoe on it. He sent it with a letter to Röntgen, congratulating him on the discovery. Röntgen, in turn, wrote to Tesla commending him on taking a remarkably clear shadowgraph. Shadowgraphs played an important role in the development of X-ray machines, which were never able to produce an image as clear as Tesla’s.

6. Tesla Radio:

The inventor of the radio is a point of contention. In 1895, Tesla was getting ready to transmit a radio signal a distance of 50 miles but before he could do that, his lab burned down, delaying the test. Meanwhile, in England, an Italian man named Guglielmo Marconi was working on wireless telegraphy, and was granted a patent in 1896 for his device. His system was much different than the one Tesla built, using only two circuits but unable to transmit over long distances. Tesla’s invention would use multiple circuits, which would make it much stronger.

Tesla submitted his patent in 1897 in the United States, and it was granted in 1900. When Marconi submitted his radio patent in 1900 to the U.S. Patent Office, it was turned down because it was too similar to Tesla’s. Undeterred, Marconi opened his own company that had powerful backers, including Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Edison.

In 1901, while using a number of Tesla’s patents, including a Tesla oscillator, Marconi was able to transmit a signal across the Atlantic. In 1904, without giving a clear reason, the patent office reversed their decision and said that Marconi’s patent was valid, making him the inventor of the radio. Marconi won the Nobel Prize in 1911 and in 1915, Tesla sued Marconi’s corporation. Unfortunately, at that point in his life, Tesla was too poor to take on a major corporation. The case wasn’t settled until a few months after Tesla’s death in 1943, when the Supreme Court upheld Tesla’s patent.

5. Tesla Neon Lamps:

While fluorescent and neon lights weren’t discovered by Tesla, he did make many contributions to the advancement of both. What’s interesting is that no one working with cathode rays, which are the electrons observed in vacuum tubes like neon lights, really came up with a practical application for the technology.

Tesla saw an opportunity and experimented with running electrical particles through gasses, developing four different types of lighting. For example, he converted black light into visible light using a phosphorescent substance (which he created), and also found a practical use for such a technology when he created lamps and neon signs. At the World’s Columbian Exposition, otherwise known as the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, at his personal exhibit Tesla had neon signs that were unique designs and written words. The idea gained popularity and now neon lights and signs light up major cities around the world.

4. The Adams Power Plant Transformer House:

The Niagara Falls Commission was looking for a company to build a hydroelectric plant that would harness the mighty power of the falls for years. At first, they considered Thomas Edison’s direct current plant, but after witnessing Tesla’s alternating current that was offered by Westinghouse Electric, Westinghouse was offered the contract in 1893. Westinghouse used designs from Tesla but a big hurdle remained on the front of getting and keeping funding for such an ambitious task that a lot of people doubted would work.

Yet when the switch was flipped on November 16, 1896, the Adams Power Plant Transformer House worked and started powering the city of Buffalo, New York. Ten more generators were built and helped power New York City. The plant was considered revolutionary and set the standard for modern hydroelectric power plants.

3. Tesla Induction Motor:

An induction motor uses alternating current and essentially has two parts – a stator and a rotor. The stator stays stationary (duh) and uses electromagnets to spin the rotor that’s in the middle. Induction motors are noted for being durable, easy to maintain and cheap to run.

In the 1880s, there were two people who were working separately on the induction motor: Tesla and Galileo Ferrari. They both presented their findings in 1888, with the Italian inventor Ferrari presenting his engine two months before Tesla presented his. However, Tesla’s patents held up under the weight of the evidence. Both had developed the same technology and came to the same independent conclusion, but Tesla had filed his patents first. The induction motor was incredibly influential and is still used in everyday products like vacuums, blow dryers, and power tools.

2. Tesla Teleautomaton:

In 1898, at the Electrical Exhibition at Madison Square Garden, Tesla showed off an invention he called “tela automaton“, which was a boat controlled by radio waves. He didn’t even have a patent because the patent office didn’t want to issue one on something that they didn’t think was feasible, but he proved them wrong at the exhibition. Tesla controlled the battery operated boat, operating the propeller and lights through the radio waves.

This invention was a big first in three different areas. The first was remote controls, influencing the development of objects like television remotes and garage door openers. Secondly, the boat was also one of the earliest robots, as it was a mechanical object that could be controlled without a human physically touching it. Finally, the combination of robotics and radio control technology makes Tesla’s boat the great grandfather of drones.

1. Alternating Current:

Without question, the most important inventions from Nikola Tesla involve his contributions to alternating current (AC). It’s essential to note that he did not invent or even discover AC, but his inventions made AC applicable for widespread use, helping to electrify the world.

The story of how Tesla’s AC current came to be the dominant power system is impossible to tell without talking about Thomas Edison. In his early career, Tesla worked for Edison, whose company had developed direct current (DC). DC is similar to a battery, in that it only sends power out. The problem with DC is that the electricity loses power as it gets farther out. That’s when Tesla developed his advancements in AC, which not only sends power out but also brings power back to the source. This made it much more feasible to send large amounts of energy over a large area.

Edison hated AC and thought that Tesla was completely wrong on the topic, leading to a rift between the two. While Tesla was unemployed, he worked odd jobs until he was able to raise money for the Tesla Electric Company. His work caught the attention of engineer and businessman George Westinghouse, who bought most of Edison’s patents involving AC.

A pivotal moment in the history of electricity came down to lighting the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. Edison and Westinghouse both submitted quotes with Edison saying he could light the whole fair for $554,000, while Westinghouse said it could be done for $399,000. Westinghouse won the contract, and after the fair, AC became more popular and, eventually, the dominant electrical system that we still use today.
