China Aims to Wash VPNs Out of Its Hair.

China this week announced new measures to further restrict its citizens' access to the Internet.
The 14-month campaign appears designed to crack down on the use of Web platforms and services unapproved by the government, and on virtual private networks, which can used to access those platforms and services covertly.
While China's Internet network access services market is facing many development opportunities, there are signs of "disorderly development" that show the urgent need for regulation, the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology explained in a notice posted to a government website.
The coming "clean-up" of China's network access services will standardize the market, strengthen network information security management, and promote the healthy and orderly development of the country's Internet industry, the ministry noted.
In order to operate legally, Internet service providers, VPN providers, data centers and content delivery networks will have to obtain a license from the government and adhere to strict limitations.

Great Firewall

The clean-up also places severe new restrictions on cross-border business activities. It requires that government approval be obtained to create or lease lines, including VPN channels, to perform cross-border business activities.
Those restrictions essentially will block any Chinese citizen from using a VPN -- basically, hiding their IP address and rerouting their connections to servers outside their country -- in order to access websites the government doesn't want them to see.
China is famous for controlling the information its citizens can see on the Internet with its "Great Firewall," which screens Internet traffic between China and the outside world. Any requests to see information Beijing deems inappropriate are sent to an Internet graveyard.
Among the 171 of the world's top 1,000 websites the Great Firewall blocks are Google, Facebook and Twitter, according to Greatfire.org, a censorship monitoring service. VPNs offer a way to get through the firewall, which is why the government wants to block them.
China also has taken a more proactive approach to dealing with websites that it doesn't like. It crafted a Great Cannon, which it uses to launch DDoS attacks on domains critical of Beijing.

Shaping the Narrative

China's government has attempted to restrict VPN access in the past, particularly at sensitive times, such as when the national Communist party convenes. Such a meeting is scheduled for the end of this year.
The great clean-up may be a departure from the past, however.
"This new directive may be a sign that the restrictions might become more systematic," said Cynthia Wong, senior Internet researcher at Human Rights Watch.
In the past, enforcement of VPN restrictions seemed spotty. Sometimes they worked; sometimes they didn't.
"Part of the problem with censorship in China is it's often opaque," Wong told TechNewsWorld.
"Users are often left wondering why their VPN isn't working. Is it because of technical problems or is it because of the government?" she wondered. "This needs to be viewed as part of a broader crackdown on any kind of independent media by the Chinese government. In recent years, the government has doubled down on efforts to restrict any information that diverges from its official narrative."
VPNs are used for many purposes in China, though -- among them to keep companies' discussions about their intellectual property and market strategies secure.
"I would hope industry pushes back on this, because it will be much more difficult to run innovative businesses in China without full access to information," Wong said. "It's in their interest for this to be a concern for them, and they should be concerned about corporate espionage as well."

Not Good for VPN Sales

Once the great clean-up gets under way, it's going to be difficult to sell VPNs in China.
"What they're saying is they want to listen in on VPN connections," explained Glenn Chagnot, vice president of marketing for Uplevel Systems. "In order to meet that requirement, we'd have to re-architect our product."
That's because with Uplevel's product, the encryption keys reside with the user, so the VPN provider has no way of decrypting the user's traffic.
Uplevel has limited its sales to the United States because selling VPNs internationally can be challenging, Chagnot noted.
"The technical requirements vary from country to country," he told TechNewsWorld. "What works for the U.S. doesn't necessarily work for Europe and doesn't necessarily work for China."
Asked if more and more countries are seeking the power to snoop on VPNs, Chagnot replied, "Absolutely."

ISRO to Launch Record 83 Satellites on a Single Rocket Next Month

ISRO to Launch Record 83 Satellites on a Single Rocket Next Month

ISRO to Launch Record 83 Satellites on a Single Rocket Next Monthisro
ISRO Tuesday said it would launch a record 83 satellites in one go using its workhorse PSLV-C37 toward the end of January.
"We are working for a January launch. It will be toward the end of January. The date has to be fixed," Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman A S Kiran Kumar told reporters in Bengaluru.
Of the 83 satellites, 80 belong to Israel, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Switzerland and the US. They weigh about 500kg. The three Indian satellites are Cartosat-2 series, weighing 730kg as primary payload, and INS-IA and INS-1B, weighing 30kg.
Setting a record in its space programme, ISRO in June had successfully launched 20 satellites, including its earth observation Cartosat-2 series, in a single mission on board PSLV-C34 from the spaceport in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The space agency had earlier sent 10 satellites into orbit in a single mission in 2008.

Calling 2016 a "good" year, Kumar said ISRO would launch at least five communication satellites in 2017. "It (launches) will be more next year, we are actually looking at almost something like five communication satellites, then many more others. Some earth observation also," he said in response to a question on the number of launches that can be expected in 2017. "In the year we are primarily trying to do our GSLV Mark III, then Mark II... one more launch we are trying to do," Kumar said.
The first three months should see three launches, beyond which ISRO was targeting almost one a month, he said on the sidelines of the 21st convocation of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru.
Stating that 2016 was a good year because ISRO was able to improve on what they were doing the previous year, Kumar said the main emphasis now was on building capacity.
"We need more and more capacity, launch capacity. We are working toward that. Our effort is to continuously increase," he added.
On transponder augmentation that ISRO is looking for, he said, "GSAT-17 is having another 48 transponders, then there is a SAARC satellite which will have about 12 transponders, then we are getting into the next generation GSAT-11 and GSAT-19. We are trying to do something like 14 gigabyte and 90 gigabyte type of thing- multi beam satellites."
Noting that ISRO is conducting tests for hazard avoidance for Chandrayaan 2 as it lands, he said, "We are verifying the performance of the system as designed."
"Chandrayaan 2, we are preparing for hazard avoidance, as it lands then it has to avoid boulders and things. We are verifying the performance of the system as designed, so there are some craters created and as it comes down how it negotiates. We are evaluating the performance of the system," he added.
ISRO has been conducting these tests at its facility in Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

MS Dhoni was not under any pressure to step down from captaincy

MS Dhoni was not under any pressure to step down from captaincy

MS Dhoni was not under any pressure to step down from captaincy

What’s the Story?

MS Dhoni’s decision to step down from captaincy in ODIs and T20Is certainly came as a shock to both players and supporters alike. Now it has emerged that despite his lacklustre performances with the bat there was no pressure on him from the selectors to step down and his decision was completely out of his own volition.
While MS Dhoni’s performances with the bat haven’t been as good as they have been in the past as evident from the fact that he hasn’t scored a century in an ODI since October 2013 and his career average, which has been in excess of 50 has been on the way down.

In case you did not know...

After winning everything there is to win in international cricket as a captain, few doubted MS Dhoni’s credentials as a skipper but his recent poor form meant that some questioned whether he was still the right man for the job.
He is India’s most successful captain and led the the team to victory in the World T20 in 2007, the 2011 World Cup in India, and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. Apart from being the player with most international matches as captain, he is also the only one to have captained in more than 50 matches across all three formats.
MS Dhoni surprised everyone by calling time on his limited-overs captaincy career which encompassed 199 ODIs and 72 T20Is. The news was announced by the BCCI, who tweeted it after the 35-year-old, who is currently in Nagpur with the Jharkhand side he is mentoring during the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy against Gujarat, conveyed the decision to the chairman of selectors MSK Prasad.
The selection committee is in Nagpur and the squad for the ODI and T20I series will be announced on Friday (January 6) with Virat Kohli as the front-runner to replace the 35-year-old as captain.

The heart of the matter

During the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy clash between Jharkhand, Dhoni’s home state and Gujarat, which the former lost on day four, he had a conversation with Prasad. This took place during the tea break and it was a long one.
Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, MSK Prasad said: "We all know his sense of integrity and patriotism, and he has got high clarity in thinking. Probably he felt that is the best decision, so let us respect it.”
Sources also added that the selectors had a chat with Dhoni but that was only about his plans for the immediate future and had nothing to do with asking him to step down.

What next?

As the three-match ODI and T20I series will be the last limited-overs series before the ICC Champions Trophy in June, India will have to pick Dhoni’s successor wisely and also think about grooming a wicketkeeper as well.

No one knows what is good for MS Dhoni than the man himself. And having already said that an ODI captain needs a long time to prepare before a World Cup, perhaps he felt that the time was right to pass on the baton to another player.
The decision certainly looks like one that was well thoughtout and captaining in a Champions Trophy will certainly give his successor some much-needed experience before doing so in the World Cup so while the decision is sudden, it may prove to be the right call in the end.

After hearing Conspiracies from a long time NASA finally released 10,000 photos of Apollo Mission. Check now!

NASA has reacted to years of Conspiracy theories surrounding the Apollo Moon Mission by releasing 10,000 photos to prove it did actually happen.
Some conspiracy theories suggest in was Stanley Kubrick that that directed the fakery with a video emerging that he admitted he faked it. However, it looks like these photos may stop the theories altogether.

Vintage news reports: Some say it was a giant leap for humanity, some say it was fake, some even say Stanely Kubrick directed it. However, the landing on the moon is still a subject that evokes mixed emotions.
Recently, NASA uploaded just about every image captured by Apollo astronauts on lunar missions, which you can find on their Project Apollo Archive Flickr account.https://www.flickr.com/photos/projectapolloarchive/
There are some 8,400 photographs in all at a resolution of 1800 dpi, and they’re sorted by the roll of film they were on.

US Releases Detailed Look at Russia's Election Hacking

US Releases Detailed Look at Russia's Election Hacking:

US Releases Detailed Look at Russia's Election Hacking

The US on Thursday released its most detailed report yet on Russia's efforts to interfere in the US presidential election by hacking American political sites and email accounts.
The 13-page joint analysis by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI was the first such report ever to attribute malicious cyber activity to a particular country or actors.
It was also the first time the US has officially and specifically tied intrusions into the Democratic National Committee to hackers with the Russian civilian and military intelligence services, the FSB and GRU, expanding on an October 7 accusation by the Obama administration.
The report said the intelligence services were involved in "an ongoing campaign of cyber-enabled operations directed at the US government and its citizens." It added, "In some cases, (the Russian intelligence services') actors masqueraded as third parties, hiding behind false online personas designed to cause the victim to misattribute the source of the attack."
Over the summer stolen emails from Democrats were posted by an online persona known as Guccifer 2.0, believed by US officials to be linked to Russia. Outrage over documents that appeared to show favoritism for Hillary Clinton forced the DNC's chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to resign. The US released the report as President Barack Obama sanctioned the GRU and the FSB, the GRU's leadership and companies which the US said support the GRU.
Thursday's sanctions were the administration's first use of a 2015 executive order for combatting cyber-attacks against critical infrastructure and commercial espionage. Because election systems aren't considered critical infrastructure, Obama amended the order Thursday to allow for sanctions on entities "interfering with or undermining election processes or institutions."
The retaliation against Russia, just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, culminated months of political handwringing about how and whether to respond to Moscow's meddling. US intelligence agencies concluded that Russia's goal was to help Trump win - an assessment Trump has dismissed as ridiculous. Trump said Thursday he would meet with the intelligence community's leaders next week for an update on the situation.
The report did not go far beyond confirming details already disclosed by cyber-security firm CrowdStrike, which was hired to investigate the DNC hacks.
It described the intelligence services' use of "spearphishing" - fake emails intended to trick victims into typing in their user names and passwords. At least one person opened attachments with malicious software. The report noted that actors "likely associated" with Russian intelligence services are continuing to engage in spearphishing campaigns, including one launched just days after the US election.
The DNC was infiltrated by the FSB in summer 2015 and again by the GRU in spring 2016 using spearphishing emails that often appeared to come from legitimate or official organizations, the report said.
Russian officials have denied any involvement in hacking US political sites and emails.
The report provides clues for cybersecurity workers in the private sector to identify compromised systems and prevent more intrusions. The Department of Homeland Security said it has already included this information within its own cyber threat information-sharing program, which automatically flags threats in real time for participating companies and agencies.
US officials also provided antivirus vendors with two malicious software samples used by Russian intelligence services.
